FREE MASONARY IN BERKSHIRE
In my masonic Lodge I am address as Worshipful Brother John Howard, all this means is I have been in the lodge chair as Worshipful Master a position in the lodge where you take control of all the workings of a lodge for one year, this was in 2008.
I was invited to become a free mason to join the masonic movement in 1997, I was initiated into my mother lodge Star of Stoneleigh, Sutton, Surrey, moved to Bracknell in 2004 then after a short while traveling to Sutton I found it to be too much so looked for a lodge locally and was invited to join Downshire Lodge, they hold 4 meeting a year and use Wokingham Masonic Centre. My position in Downshire Lodge is Assistant Director of Ceremonies, which means you assist the Director of Ceremonies, the clue to his job is in the title, he directs what goes on at lodge meetings. I enjoy being a free Mason, I enjoy the history of the movement the ceremonies, the camaraderie and brotherhood of being with other like minded persons. I am also Charity Steward to the lodge, this involves collecting money through various means like raffles, etc, the monies collected goes into a masonic charity fund where it is distributed to needy courses.
We only meet 4 times a year, the third Mondays in October - November - February and April, there is a night of instruction where we practice going through the ceremonies of the first, second and third degrees, this takes place every Monday evening at the Wokingham Masonic Centre, it is not compulsory but essential should you want to get the masonic workings correct at the meetings plus it is a way of meeting the other members on a social basis, there is 6 or 7 lodges that meet at Wokingham.
To become a Free Mason you must be proposed and seconded in open lodge, then once you have been accepted it is then possible that you will be initiated at the next meeting.
